About

One of the United Kingdom’s biggest bookmakers, William Hill was founded way back in 1934 in rather unscrupulous circumstances. Gambling was illegal in Britain at the time, but that didn’t stop William Hill from forging ahead.

While it has kept it’s name for well over 80 years, it has changed hands many times, with Sears Holdings taking over in 1971, before selling it to Grand Metropolitan for a short lived stint in 1988, when Brent Walker swooped on the business.

The Japanese came in in 1997, Nomura nabbing it after Brent Walker ended up in hot water, but they off loaded it to a pair of private equity firms.

William Hill is a relatively new player in the Australian market, making its breakthrough in 2013, but not as we we know it today. The bookie bought three Australian companies – Sportingbet, Centrebet and Tom Waterhouse.

Aussie gambling mogul Waterhouse was named chief executive officer in 2014 and the three websites were amalgamated and rebranded as William Hill in 2015.

Online desktop betting interface

The William Hill home page and its dark blue with a splash of yellow aesthetic catches the eye straight away and alludes to the functional experience you’re going to get when you’re ready to search for markets and place your bet. Whether it is racing or sport you’re after, both feature prominently on the home page and are easy to find.

For starters, you’ll need to sign up and it is very easy to do so, simply click the ‘Get started’ icon in the top right hand corner of the page. If you already have an account, ‘log in’ is right next to it and there are also options for ‘chat live’ and ‘Help’, in case you need further information.

On the top left there is a magnifying glass that helps you search for markets or you can access your personal account details. William Hill has a menu running across the top with the popular sports of the time, and a drop down at the end of it on the right hand side that shows all the sports.

You can access the bookie’s jockey challenges, quick multis, promotions and results in the left hand menu. On the right, you’ll find your bet slip, pending bets and the bookie’s blog, as well as the time, to help you match up with the start of your games.

It’s latest promos are available in the banners in the centre of the site, with racing featuring prominently, with the most popular runners in the next couple of races just one click away. Underneath the next to go racing module is the next to play sports and featured events, which is self explanatory.

A handy sub menu on the right gives you an idea of where punters are seeing their money. ‘trending bets’ features the most popular bets of the time and can help guide your money.

Tabs with live streaming and accessibility to the mobile devices are further down the right hand side of the page, along with a number of FAQ’s to help your betting experience run smoothly.

The bottom menu features details about the bookmaker, including terms and conditions, as well as accepted payment methods, major betting partners and access to social media.

Mobile and tablet applications

It is very easy to get mobile with William Hill so you can bet on the go, with a mobile app for both iOS and Android devices. Registration is very easy, with a one time log in a feature, so you’re not mucking around every time you want to get a bet on – time is of the essence.

You’ll get exclusive tips and previews from the bookie’s bloggers through the app and the user friendly interface puts every thing a punter needs at their fingertips. Every market on the desktop site is available on mobile.
